Virginia Tech was named the No. 1 seed for the UTR Sports NIT Championship, according to an April 30 announcement.

The tournament gives Virginia Tech’s men’s tennis team a chance to extend its season and compete at a high level after finishing with a record of 6-16 overall and 3-10 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The event will be held at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College. The Hokies are scheduled to play their semifinal match on May 7 at 2:30 p.m., facing either No. 4 UT Chattanooga or No. 5 NC Central, depending on which team advances from that matchup.

Head Coach Jim Thompson said, “We are super excited to play in the UTR Sports NIT Championship. The facilities in Rome are very good, and I feel like it will give our guys another great opportunity to finish off this season. Our guys are excited to compete!”

If Virginia Tech wins its semifinal match, it will move on to play for the championship title on May 8 at 9 a.m., taking on either No. 2 North Alabama or No. 3 Longwood. The last time Virginia Tech played one of these teams was against Longwood during the previous season, resulting in a home victory for the Hokies by a score of 6-1 on January 17, 2025.

This year marks the fourth edition of the UTR Sports NIT Championship since its inception in 2023.
