The Virginia Tech baseball team won an 8-6 game against VCU on April 21, sweeping the regular season home-and-home series between the programs.
The result gives Virginia Tech (20-19) a boost as they approach upcoming conference play. The Hokies used six doubles and timely hitting to secure the victory at The Diamond in Richmond.
Freshman Ethan Ball led the way for Virginia Tech with two doubles in a 2-for-4 performance. Seven Hokies recorded hits and six drove in runs. Henry Cooke went 2-for-5 with three RBIs, while Sam Grube added two hits from the leadoff spot. The top three hitters—Grube, Ethan Gibson, and Ball—scored seven of the team’s eight runs.
Pitching contributions included Madden Clement’s two and two-thirds innings to start before Aiden Robertson delivered four and one-third innings of relief with a season-high six strikeouts, earning his first win for Virginia Tech. Brody Roe closed out the game with a six-out save, his first since joining the team.
Offensively, Ball set up an early lead by doubling in the first inning and scoring after Gibson walked. Cooke’s RBI groundout opened scoring before more Hokies reached base to push across another run. Gibson hit his fourth home run of the year in the second inning to extend his hitting streak to ten games. In later innings, Gates started a three-run sixth for Virginia Tech with a double that Grube followed up with another double for what proved to be decisive runs.
VCU threatened late but could not overcome Virginia Tech’s advantage as Roe secured the final outs despite allowing an unearned run in the ninth inning.
Looking ahead, Virginia Tech will begin a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference home series against NC State starting Friday at English Field.
