The Virginia Tech baseball team defeated James Madison University 14-1 on Apr. 28 during a seven-inning game at English Field, which was shortened by the run rule.

The win marks Virginia Tech’s second consecutive calendar sweep of James Madison, after a previous victory against the Dukes earlier in the season. The Hokies have now won seven of their last nine games and could see an improvement in their NCAA Division I RPI ranking, where they stood at No. 36 before this game.

Nick Locurto led the Hokies’ offense with his third three-hit performance of the season, contributing two run-scoring singles—one in the first inning and another in the sixth. Sam Grube and Ethan Gibson each went two-for-three at bat and scored twice from their spots at the top of the batting order. Pete Daniel and Owen Petrich also had strong showings, each going two-for-four and reaching base three times.

Pitcher Madden Clement started for Virginia Tech, allowing only one run over three and two-thirds innings while scattering four hits. Four relievers—Brody Roe, Brendan Yagesh, Luke Craytor, and Danny Lazaro—combined to hold James Madison scoreless for the remainder of the game. This outing marked Virginia Tech’s fifth bullpen shutout appearance this season.

Walks from JMU pitchers helped fuel early scoring opportunities for Virginia Tech. Locurto delivered a key two-RBI single with bases loaded in the first inning to open scoring for his team. In total, all nine offensive starters recorded at least one hit during Tuesday’s matchup—the first time this has happened for Virginia Tech this season.

Looking ahead, Virginia Tech will travel to California for its longest road trip of 2026 to play a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series against Cal at Evans Diamond at Stu Gordon Stadium.
