Virginia swimming and diving head coach Todd DeSorbo announced on May 19 the hiring of Reed Fujan as associate head coach.
The appointment is notable for Virginia’s program, which continues to strengthen its coaching staff with experienced leaders from other successful collegiate teams.
Fujan joins Virginia after three years as associate head coach at Louisville, where he helped the Cardinals earn 49 All-America honors. The Cardinal women were runners-up in the Atlantic Coast Conference during his first season, their best finish in seven years. Under his guidance, the women’s team finished in the top eight at NCAA championships each year, while the men’s team placed in the top fifteen.
Before Louisville, Fujan held a similar role at Alabama. There he contributed to historic results for both men’s and women’s teams. In 2022, he helped lead the Crimson Tide women to their highest NCAA Championships finish ever—fourth place with a school-record 288 points. The previous season they finished fifth. Combined, Alabama men and women earned twenty medals at the Southeastern Conference Championships in 2021—including ten golds—and set several school and conference records over five days of competition.
DeSorbo said: “We couldn’t be more excited to welcome Reed Fujan to our program. Reed has built an outstanding reputation at Louisville as both a coach and a recruiter, and his passion for developing elite swimmers is exactly what we look for on our staff. He shares the same values and commitment to excellence that have helped us build this program into what it is today. Our student-athletes are going to benefit tremendously from his experience, and I think he’s going to fit in seamlessly with our culture here at Virginia. We can’t wait to get to work.”
Fujan also served as volunteer assistant at Indiana University when they won their second consecutive Big Ten Championship and finished third nationally. He was later head coach of St. John’s University swimming and diving during the 2018-19 season.
A native of Byron, Minnesota, Fujan swam collegiately for Notre Dame where he was co-captain his senior year—a three-time All-American who earned Academic All-ACC honors twice before graduating with a degree in management consulting in 2017.
“I want to thank Todd DeSorbo and the staff for the opportunity to be part of one of the best programs in the world,” Fujan said. “From the outside, it’s clear this team knows how to work hard and have fun, and that balance seems to be a big part of their success. I’m excited to get to Charlottesville and get to work. Go Hoos!”
The addition of Fujan brings further experience across multiple conferences known for strong collegiate swimming programs.
