The University of Virginia honored its senior softball players on April 27 during a ceremony at Palmer Park, celebrating the contributions of five Virginians who have helped elevate the program. The group, known as the Faithful Five, includes Kelsey Hackett, Courtney Layne, Kassidy Hudson, Eden Bigham, and Jade Hylton.

Their impact has been significant as they have remained together throughout their college careers in an era when player transfers are common. This continuity is cited as a key reason for Virginia’s appearance in the NCAA tournament for three consecutive years.

Head coach Joanna Hardin said, “They just elevated the program the moment they walked on Grounds, so I’m super indebted to them. I’m very grateful for their belief in the vision of what UVA softball could be… it takes a class, a few people in a class, to really take a risk.” Hylton reflected on her team’s journey: “We knew each other…so I think we knew the potential we had and knew the impact that we could give this program.”

On Senior Day against NC State at Palmer Park, all five seniors played key roles in securing a 7-4 win. Hylton started off with a home run and said she wanted to focus despite it being an emotional day: “That was a good start and kind of got our offense rolling. So, a good moment. Definitely one I’ll remember for a long time.” Sophomore Alex Call added about sending off her teammates: “It was great to get to see all of them play today…we were just so happy to have them with us and so grateful for everything that they’ve done for this program.”

Afterward, Hardin addressed each senior during video tributes and praised their commitment through adversity: “At a time in college athletics where it’s easy to look around and think…you five chose something harder. You chose to stay and to build and to believe.” She concluded by telling them: “This weekend is a celebration; it’s not an ending. We still have more to chase…and more moments to create together.”

Virginia will host the Atlantic Coast Conference softball tournament from May 6 through May 9 at Palmer Park after clinching one of twelve spots in conference play this season.
