The Virginia Senate Republican Caucus said on May 4 that Gov. Abigail Spanberger has made life more unaffordable for Virginians through policies, including a $500 million carbon tax and a new payroll tax. The caucus made the statement in response to Spanberger’s Affordable Virginia Agenda in a post on X.
The caucus said its criticism was prompted by the governor’s cost-of-living proposals, which it argued had contributed to higher costs for residents. The group compared the situation to “an arsonist complaining that a house is on fire after they poured gasoline and lit the match,” according to their post.
One policy cited by the caucus was Virginia rejoining the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, which it said could raise electricity costs for ratepayers by about $500 million annually. The estimate comes from the Thomas Jefferson Institute.
The caucus also referenced Virginia’s paid family and medical leave program, funded through shared payroll contributions from employers and employees. Contributions are scheduled to begin April 1, 2028, with benefits becoming available Dec. 1, 2028, according to the Virginia Employment Commission.
The Virginia Senate Republican Caucus represents Republican members of the Virginia State Senate and says it focuses on policies that promote economic growth, lower taxes and reduce government size in the Commonwealth, according to its website.
