The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) has opened the application process for the 2025 Specialty Crop Block Grant program. Funded by the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service, this initiative aims to boost the competitiveness of Virginia’s specialty crops in the market.

Eligible entities such as state and local government agencies, educational institutions, non-profit organizations, and agricultural associations may apply for grants up to $100,000 per project. However, individual producers do not qualify for this grant. All applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 2, 2025. The grant period will commence on October 1, 2025, lasting up to two years.

Applicants should currently use the 2024 application form, available at www.vdacs.virginia.gov/sales-specialty-crop-competitive-grant-program.shtml. Notifications regarding any new 2025 form updates can be requested via email to melissa.ball@vdacs.virginia.gov. The funding depends on federal availability.

The grant program will also feature two virtual information sessions to provide detailed guidance. Visit the VDACS website for session links, as well as additional information including guidelines and applications from previous years.

Applications and related inquiries should be directed to Janelle Otieno at janelle.otieno@vdacs.virginia.gov or mailed to VDACS, Specialty Crop Block Grant Application, 102 Governor Street, Richmond, VA 23219.

Proposals for these grants must clearly outline how the funds will be utilized to improve the competitiveness of specialty crops. Projects that focus on research, marketing, promotion, food safety, or enhancing food access are encouraged. VDACS will prioritize projects aimed solely at increasing competitiveness in these areas.

Specialty crops include fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, horticulture, and nursery crops, including floriculture. Further information regarding eligible crops is accessible at www.ams.usda.gov/services/grants/scbgp/specialty-crop.
