The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is urging drivers to pay attention to rail safety during Operation Lifesaver’s See Tracks? Think Train! Week, which runs from September 15 to 21. The campaign aims to reduce incidents at highway-rail grade crossings throughout the state.
According to the Federal Railroad Administration, between 2021 and July 2025, there were 176 incidents at highway-rail grade crossings in Virginia. These incidents led to 44 injuries and 18 fatalities. In 2024, Virginia ranked 21st in the nation for the number of collisions at these types of crossings.
VDOT Commissioner Stephen C. Brich stated, “Collisions are preventable, especially when there are clear signs of an oncoming train. Drivers have a responsibility to follow the rules of the road, and that includes obeying signs, gates and other warning devices when they approach a railroad crossing.”
Most incidents involved vehicles not stopping or going around gates despite active warning devices being present. Over 95% of such incidents since 2021 occurred at crossings equipped with some type of warning device. More than 87% happened because vehicles failed to stop, stopped on the crossing itself, or went around closed gates.
VDOT has outlined several safety tips for drivers:
– Trains may be closer and moving faster than they appear.
– Trains cannot stop quickly.
– Never drive, pedal or walk around lowered gates; it is illegal and dangerous.
– Walking on or beside railroad tracks is illegal.
– Only cross if you can completely clear the tracks without stopping.
– If your vehicle stalls on tracks, exit immediately and use the Emergency Notification System sign to call for help.
– Watch out for second trains at multiple track crossings.
– Use only designated crossings and never stop within 15 feet of a rail.
– Avoid distractions such as phones or loud music when approaching a crossing.
VDOT continues its efforts to remind Virginians about their role in preventing rail-related accidents by following these guidelines.
