The Virginia Manufacturers Association announced on April 30 that it is joining employers, educators, workforce partners, and policymakers across the country to celebrate National Apprenticeship Week from April 26 to May 2.
National Apprenticeship Week highlights the importance of Registered Apprenticeship programs in building a skilled workforce and supporting economic growth. The event’s theme for 2026 is “America at Work: Making America Skilled Again Through Registered Apprenticeship.”
Wes Smith, Workforce Solutions Director at the Virginia Manufacturers Association and Executive Director of the Manufacturing Skills Institute, said, “Manufacturers across Virginia depend on a highly skilled workforce to compete and grow. Registered Apprenticeship delivers exactly that—real jobs paired with structured training and nationally recognized credentials. National Apprenticeship Week is an opportunity to spotlight how manufacturers are developing talent today to meet the needs of tomorrow.”
The association said it has supported apprenticeship as a key part of workforce development through its affiliate, the Manufacturing Skills Institute. The institute helps manufacturers design and expand apprenticeship programs tailored to industry needs. These programs offer paid training while helping employers improve recruitment, retention, and productivity.
Registered Apprenticeships have grown beyond traditional construction trades into fields such as advanced manufacturing, automation, artificial intelligence, shipbuilding, and energy-related occupations. The association noted that these programs are updated regularly so apprentices learn skills relevant for changing industries.
The Virginia Manufacturers Association encourages businesses and job seekers to explore how apprenticeships can contribute to long-term economic growth during National Apprenticeship Week.
