The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) is inviting applications from charitable food assistance organizations for the Virginia Agriculture Food Assistance Program (VAFAP). This state initiative supports organizations in purchasing Virginia-grown agricultural products to be distributed to food-insecure residents across the state, following specific distribution guidelines.

VAFAP was established in 2021 by the Virginia General Assembly, aiming to benefit both local farmers and food assistance groups. The program offers a total of $1.1 million in reimbursable grants, compensating farmers for food products donated or sold to participating organizations.

Charitable food assistance organizations have until 5 p.m. on May 9, 2025, to submit their applications. Proposals must outline strategies to engage local farmers and detail distribution plans for the acquired agricultural goods.

“This type of partnership is a win-win, as it helps to address food insecurity and support local agriculture,” stated VDACS Commissioner Joseph Guthrie. “Producers are compensated for their crop, nutritious food is not wasted, and additional food resources are available to charitable organizations throughout the Commonwealth.”

The selection process for the grants will be competitive, with a review panel assessing proposals to ensure optimal outcomes. Applicants will be informed of their proposal’s status, whether successful or not, following the review.
