Motorists in Central Virginia are being advised to exercise caution as dropping pavement temperatures could lead to the refreezing of wet roads overnight from Friday into Saturday morning. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) stated that while most interstates and primary roads are currently clear, untreated or wet areas may become slick and hazardous due to possible refreeze.
VDOT crews and contractors will continue monitoring and treating roadways as needed. Drivers are urged to reduce speed, allow extra space for road crews, and use increased caution on bridges, ramps, and overpasses since these elevated surfaces tend to freeze before others.
Travelers can access updated road and traffic information using VDOT’s free mobile 511 app, by visiting 511.vdot.virginia.gov, or by calling 511 within Virginia. Additional driving tips for winter weather conditions are available on VDOT’s winter weather page.
For questions or to report hazardous conditions, motorists can contact VDOT’s 24-hour Customer Service Center at my.vdot.virginia.gov or call 800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623).
“Motorists should use caution, limit travel, and be aware of possible icing on roadways that appears wet or damp,” the agency said in its statement.
