The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has released its weekly update on highway construction and maintenance projects in southwestern Virginia. This report, covering March 10-16, 2025, aims to inform motorists about ongoing work zones and traffic changes.

VDOT encourages drivers to stay informed by calling 511 or visiting their website for real-time traffic updates.

Key interstate projects include the widening of I-81 in Washington County, truck climbing lanes in Washington and Smyth counties, and various roadway improvements across Wythe County. These projects are scheduled for completion between late 2025 and fall 2026.

In Bristol, a project to widen Route 11 is underway to improve traffic flow. In Bland County, bridge replacement and rehabilitation work continues on I-77 with nighttime lane closures expected.

Primary highways also see significant activity. Buchanan County is experiencing road closures due to coal preparation plant expansion, while Dickenson County’s Route 63 bridge replacement is controlling traffic with temporary signals.

Scott County has begun improvements at the intersection of Route 23/58, including adding turn lanes. A new project on Route 622 involves a bridge replacement over Cox Branch requiring detours from March 11-12.

Other notable projects include roundabout construction on Route 11 in Smyth County and intersection improvements in Tazewell County’s Bluefield area. In Wise County, safety improvements at the intersection of Route 23 and Carriage Lane are set to begin soon.

For more detailed information about each project, motorists should refer to VDOT’s communication channels.
