The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is set to hold a public hearing on May 20 to discuss proposed upgrades to the interchange at Interstate 66 and U.S. 17 (Winchester Road), located at Exit 28 in Fauquier County.
This project, which receives funding from the SMART Scale program, aims to alter the current rural, unsignalized diamond interchange where U.S. 17 meets both directions of I-66 just south of Marshall. The proposed changes include reconstructing the I-66 westbound ramps into a roundabout and reconfiguring the eastbound ramps into a restricted crossing U-turn (RCUT) intersection.
These modifications are intended to enhance safety along the U.S. 17 corridor by reducing conflict points significantly. The roundabout planned for the north side of the interchange is also expected to alleviate congestion by boosting traffic flow.
The hearing will take place from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Marshall Community Center, located at 4133-A Rectortown Road, Marshall, VA 20115. Attendees can visit anytime during this period to view project displays, ask questions, and provide feedback.
Comments regarding the project can be sent via mail to John Rose, Project Manager, at 1601 Orange Road, Culpeper VA 22701 or by email at john.rose1@vdot.virginia.gov with “I-66 at U.S. 17 (exit 28) interchange improvements” in the subject line.
