In Wythe County, a deceleration lane extension is being constructed at exit 81 on I-81 southbound, anticipated to finish by October 2025. Another project involves constructing an auxiliary lane southbound between exits 73 and 72, scheduled for completion by fall 2026.
Bristol is witnessing the start of a Route 11 widening project alongside improvements to I-81 off-ramps at exit 5. This initiative aims to enhance traffic flow and safety with an expected end date of May 2026.
Interstate 77 is undergoing several improvements across different counties. In Wythe County, roadway enhancements from exit 40 to exit 47 are set to conclude by May 2025. A bridge replacement over Route 606 in Bland County is projected for late 2025 completion. Additionally, bridge rehabilitation over Route 52 will see periodic lane closures until May 2025.
A new truck climbing lane on I-77 northbound from mile marker 30.6 to exit 32 in Wythe County has begun construction with a June 2026 target date for completion.
Maintenance activities on Interstates I-81 and I-77 include mobile lane closures due to pothole patching and nighttime bridge deck repairs across various counties.
On primary highways and high-traffic secondary roads, Buchanan County sees ongoing work on Route 632 (Page Drive) due to coal preparation plant expansion efforts by Buchanan Materials, slated for late spring next year. The Poplar Creek Phase A construction continues while Phase B introduces new traffic patterns along Route 460 near Grundy.
Other notable projects include bridge replacements in Dickenson County’s Town of Haysi and Grayson County’s pipe replacement on Route 670 (Laurel View Road). Intersection improvements are underway in Scott County at the intersection of Routes23/58 at Duffield with a projected finish by June 2026.
