Road conditions in the Salem District of western Virginia have improved following a winter storm, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). Crews have been working to clear snow from roadways, with interstates and primary roads now mostly clear except for some isolated slick spots. Efforts are ongoing to plow and treat secondary roads and neighborhood streets, with work expected to continue into the overnight hours.
Most non-hard surface secondary roads have not yet been treated. VDOT cautions drivers about the risk of icy roads as low temperatures overnight may cause moisture on road surfaces to refreeze. Crews will remain active through the night and into Saturday morning.
Drivers are advised to exercise extra caution on Saturday morning due to possible icy conditions, especially in mountainous areas, bridges, overpasses, runoff areas, and ramps. Even roads that have already been plowed could still be slick because of below-freezing temperatures.
VDOT recommends travelers check real-time information on road conditions, traffic incidents, and congestion using its 511 free mobile app or phone system or by visiting the 511 website at https://511.vdot.virginia.gov/. The service can help drivers plan their routes during adverse weather.
