Drivers in Virginia are being advised to exercise caution as winter weather is expected to affect the region early this week. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has warned that a mix of rain, snow, and freezing rain will begin Monday night in southwest Virginia and move across the state into Tuesday morning.
“Forecasts indicate that a wintery mix of rain, snow and freezing rain is expected to begin Monday night in the southwest part of Virginia and spread across the commonwealth into Tuesday morning. As rain changes to freezing rain through Tuesday morning, drivers should prepare for slower commutes and plan to leave early or delay travel and take it slow,” VDOT stated.
The department noted that impacts from the weather are likely to be more significant during the Tuesday morning rush hour, especially in western and northern parts of Virginia. Drivers are encouraged to use extra caution on roads where ice may form first, such as higher elevations, bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas. VDOT also reminded motorists not to drive distracted and ensure all passengers wear seatbelts.
VDOT crews plan to pretreat certain roadways that are more prone to icing. However, pretreatment may not occur in areas where initial rainfall could wash away treatments. “Don’t pass a snowplow or spreader unless it is absolutely necessary,” VDOT added.
The department emphasized that wet or icy roads can reduce tire traction and increase the risk of skidding. They provided several tips for driving safely on icy roads:
– Drive at lower speeds and avoid sudden movements.
– Brake early and gently rather than slamming on brakes.
– If skidding occurs, ease off the accelerator; for front-wheel skids, steer toward your intended path; for rear-wheel skids, turn the steering wheel in the direction the rear is sliding.
– Increase following distance behind other vehicles.
Before traveling, drivers are encouraged to check current road conditions using VDOT’s free 511 mobile app or by visiting 511.vdot.virginia.gov. The service provides updates on road conditions, traffic incidents, construction zones, congestion levels, access to traffic cameras, weather information, and more. Travelers can also call 511 while in Virginia for updates.
