BRISTOL – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has issued a traffic alert for the week of July 28 to August 3, 2025, detailing ongoing highway construction and maintenance projects in southwestern Virginia. Motorists are advised to exercise caution and stay informed about changes in traffic patterns when traveling through work zones.

For real-time traffic updates, travelers can contact VDOT’s 511 service or visit their website.

The following are highlights from the current list of interstate projects:

– Interstate 81 widening is underway in Washington County, with completion expected by November 2025.
– Route 11 widening at exit 5 in Bristol aims to improve traffic flow and safety, scheduled for completion by May 2026.
– Deceleration lane extension at exit 81 on I-81 southbound is ongoing in Wythe County, set to complete by October 2025.
– An auxiliary lane is being constructed between exits 73 and 72 on I-81 southbound in Wythe County with an expected completion date of Fall 2026.
– Bridge replacement on northbound I-77 at exit 62 over Route 606 is occurring in Bland County with nighttime lane closures anticipated until late 2025.
– A truck climbing lane construction on I-77 northbound from mile marker 30.6 to exit 32 is underway with a June 2026 completion target.

Additionally, updated maintenance activities on Interstates include nighttime bridge repairs and paving operations affecting various locations across Smyth County, Washington County, and Bland County.

Primary highways and secondary roads have several ongoing projects as well:

In Buchanan County:
– Bridge construction continues on Route 646 over Left Fork with an October deadline.
– Poplar Creek Phase A project has resulted in permanent changes for Route 614 access points.

In Dickenson County:
– Repairs are progressing on the Route 619 bridge over Pound River using temporary signals; this will conclude by November next year.

Scott County has initiated improvements at the intersection of Routes 23/58 that involve signal relocation and additional lanes aimed at enhancing road safety.

Tazewell County sees continued efforts towards replacing the Front Street bridge over Clinch River while motorists should heed detour signs due to closures associated with these works projected until April next year.

Further details about specific county roadworks including those affecting Wise and Wythe counties emphasize timely attention needed around work zones where developments such as new connectors or sinkhole repairs necessitate vigilance among drivers navigating these regions during active periods.
