The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) announced on March 13 its latest weekly update on highway construction and maintenance projects in southwestern Virginia, advising motorists to remain cautious and alert to changing traffic patterns and slow-moving vehicles.

This update is important for drivers planning travel in the region, as it highlights ongoing and upcoming roadwork that may affect routes and commute times. VDOT encourages travelers to use its 511 system or visit https://511.vdot.virginia.gov for real-time information.

Several major interstate projects are underway, including the extension of the deceleration lane at Interstate 81 exit 45 in Smyth County, widening efforts on I-81 in Washington County, improvements at the I-81/77 interchange at Wytheville, and a truck climbing lane project on I-77 northbound in Wythe County. Maintenance activities such as bridge repairs, line striping, pothole patching, brush removal, sweeping, and inspections are scheduled across multiple counties. Notable primary highway projects include bridge replacements on Route 608 in Bland County and Route 61 over Cove Creek in Tazewell County, roundabout construction at several intersections, culvert replacements leading to detours, intersection improvements in Scott County, safety enhancements along Route 19 in Russell County, and new connector roads supporting industrial access.

VDOT manages one of the nation’s largest state highway systems with tens of thousands of lane-miles across Virginia according to the official website. The agency’s responsibilities include building, maintaining, and operating roads, bridges, and tunnels to support safe transportation according to the official website. VDOT also provides services such as highway maintenance and traffic management through systems like Virginia 511 according to the official website.

As a state agency overseeing planning and construction of transportation infrastructure according to the official website, VDOT has evolved since its origins as the State Highway Commission in 1906 according to the official website. Its headquarters is located at 1221 East Broad Street in Richmond according to the official website.

Motorists are reminded that entries marked (NEW) or (UPDATE) indicate changes from previous reports. Drivers should pay close attention to signs and message boards throughout work zones.
