The Virginia Department of Transportation announced on May 22 that several construction and maintenance projects will impact travel across the Fredericksburg District from May 24 to May 30.

The advisory provides information about planned lane closures, detours, resurfacing work, guardrail repairs, and intersection improvements in multiple counties including Caroline, Gloucester, King George, King William, Lancaster, Northumberland, Richmond, Spotsylvania, Stafford and Westmoreland. The alert aims to inform drivers about possible delays and alternative routes during the affected period.

Among the major projects are overnight ramp closures at Interstate 95 exit 126 in Spotsylvania County for ongoing interchange improvements. Additional work includes milling and paving near exit 143 (Aquia/Garrisonville) on I-95 southbound in Stafford County. In the City of Fredericksburg and nearby areas, intersection improvement projects will lead to alternating lane closures on Route 1 northbound and southbound between Fall Hill Avenue and Falmouth Bridge as well as along Princess Anne Street.

Other significant activities include bridge rehabilitation on Route 207 over the Mattaponi River in Caroline County with completion expected by June 2026; replacement of the Route 17 northbound bridge over Dragon Run at the Gloucester-Middlesex county line with an estimated finish date of December 2027; widening of Harrison Road in Spotsylvania County; pavement marking operations across Lancaster County; road resurfacing using cape seal treatments in various subdivisions; as well as safety enhancements such as new guardrails throughout several corridors.

According to the official website, Virginia Department of Transportation manages one of the nation’s largest state highway systems spanning tens of thousands of lane-miles. The agency is responsible for building, maintaining and operating roads, bridges and tunnels statewide to ensure a safe transportation system. It also oversees traffic management through systems like Virginia 511 and administers land-use permits along state routes.

For commuters seeking alternatives during these periods of disruption or wishing to participate in ridesharing programs such as carpools or vanpools within the region served by GWRideConnect—a free service under George Washington Regional Commission—additional information is available at www.gwrideconnect.org or by calling (540)373-7665.
