RICHMOND, Va. — Another winter storm is forecasted to impact Virginia this week, with snow expected across much of the state and a slight chance of wintry mix in the southeast. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has begun pretreating roads ahead of the storm, which is anticipated to hit Wednesday morning through Thursday. Drivers are advised to give crews space as they carry out these activities.
Snowfall amounts will vary, but southeastern Virginia could see accumulations ranging from 6 to 12 inches. Due to these potential impacts, VDOT’s snow operations may extend over several days. Motorists are encouraged to keep track of local weather forecasts, adjust travel plans accordingly, and avoid driving during the storm for safety reasons.
VDOT handles snow removal on all state-maintained roads; however, cities and some towns like Arlington and Henrico counties manage their own roads. VDOT can assist if needed. Snow removal priorities start with the Interstate Highway System and limited-access roadways. Next in line are primary roads and major secondary roads serving emergency and public facilities or those with high traffic volumes. Low-volume secondary roads and subdivision streets will be cleared once higher-priority routes are addressed.
