The Virginia baseball team lost to the Pitt Panthers by a score of 11-0 in seven innings on April 25. The game, played at Charles L. Cost Field, ended early due to the run rule after Pitt scored in each of the first four innings and held Virginia to just one hit.
This result matters for Virginia as it reflects both a challenging day for their offense and pitching staff, impacting their standing within the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Kyle Johnson started for Virginia but was charged with the loss after allowing seven runs over two innings. The Cavaliers’ only hit came from Sam Harris, who singled to lead off the second inning. Pitt built an early lead with a sacrifice fly and an RBI single in the first inning, followed by three more runs in the second via doubles. In the third inning, Caden Dulin hit a two-run home run as part of another four-run frame for Pitt.
According to head coach Chris Pollard: “Credit to Pitt. Their offense is really good, one of the best in the country. You just can’t give an offense like that, that’s good top to bottom, a lot of free bases to go with the way they swing the bat and we did that early. They capitalized on it and we were playing uphill the rest of the way.” Saturday marked Virginia’s first game since March 27, 2021 where they were limited to just one base hit.
Eric Becker and AJ Gracia missed their fourth consecutive game due to upper-body injuries; both are considered day-to-day while Virginia has gone 2-2 during their absence.
The series between Virginia and Pitt is scheduled to conclude Sunday with John Paone set as starting pitcher for UVA against Drew Lafferty for Pitt.
