The Virginia baseball team was eliminated from the 2025 NCAA Tournament after a 7-6 loss to Jacksonville State on May 31 at Pete Taylor Park in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The defeat marked Virginia’s second loss of the Hattiesburg Regional, ending its season with a record of 37-23.
Jacksonville State built an early lead, scoring seven runs that included a grand slam by Sam Richardson in the second inning. Virginia attempted a comeback with a six-run rally in the eighth inning but ultimately fell short by one run.
Joe Tiroly led the Cavaliers offensively with two hits in five at-bats. Jake Weatherspoon and Eric Becker each drove in multiple runs during the late-game surge. After loading the bases with no outs in the eighth, Weatherspoon hit a three-run double to center field, later scoring on an RJ Holmes sacrifice fly. Becker followed with a two-run double that brought Virginia within one run of tying the game.
On the mound, Thomas Stewart threw three shutout innings in relief for Virginia, allowing three hits during his outing. Christian Lucarelli also pitched scoreless relief before Jacksonville State added three more runs late in the game. Lucas Hartman struck out two batters in his appearance to keep Virginia within reach going into their final at-bat.
The season concludes as Chris Pollard’s first year as head coach of Virginia baseball. The team’s 37 wins are noted as the second-most by a first-year coach at UVA, trailing only Brian O’Connor’s 44 victories in 2004. Harrison Didawick ends his career ranked among Virginia’s top ten all-time players across several categories, including games played (220), at-bats (780), runs scored (200), triples (11), home runs (42), runs batted in (182), and total bases (398).
