Trevor Veenstra and Tahj Brown led the Liberty Flames men’s track and field team with standout performances at the 130th Penn Relays on April 24 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The event is significant as it marks a major milestone for both athletes. Veenstra became the men’s discus college section champion with a personal-best throw of 178-3, while Brown set a new Liberty freshman record in the men’s 110 hurdles, finishing in 13.81 seconds.
Veenstra improved upon his previous best of 173-9 from the Virginia Challenge by surpassing that mark twice during Friday’s competition. His top effort now ranks ninth in program history and secured him a victory over Troy’s Tayjo Oppong by two and a half feet. This performance positions Veenstra to join teammates Christian Hicks and Beau Backes at next month’s NCAA Division I East First Rounds meet in the men’s discus.
Brown advanced to the finals of the men’s 110 hurdles after winning his heat with a wind-legal time of 13.81 seconds, bettering his own record set just last week. He will be one of only two freshmen competing in Saturday’s final.
Other notable results included Markus White achieving an outdoor personal-best triple jump of 49-9.25 for fifth place, placing him eighth on Liberty’s all-time list for that event. Nathan Haas finished twelfth in javelin with his best throw since March, while Lady Flames Stephanie Robson and Mackenzie Boggess both reached over twelve meters to make their triple jump final.
Liberty will continue its weekend competitions on Saturday at both the Charlotte Invitational and Penn Relays.
