VDOT crews are working to clear snow and treat icy spots on interstates and state-maintained roads in Hampton Roads after recent snowfall. The Virginia Department of Transportation has warned that temperatures are expected to remain at or below freezing through mid-Tuesday, increasing the risk of refreezing on pavement.
Officials have advised motorists to stay off the roads until conditions improve and to keep routes clear for plow crews. VDOT teams will continue working in 12-hour shifts into Tuesday, focusing on removing snow and monitoring areas that tend to freeze first, such as overpasses, bridges, and ramps.
Drivers who must travel are reminded to give road crews space, avoid passing or cutting off trucks and equipment, drive cautiously with extra distance between vehicles, and remove snow and ice from their vehicles before setting out. In emergencies, drivers should call 911.
VDOT recommends planning ahead by checking road conditions using its free 511 mobile app, which provides information about traffic incidents, construction updates, congestion reports, access to traffic cameras, weather updates, and more. Information is also available at 511.vdot.virginia.gov or by calling 511 within Virginia.
For questions or to report hazardous road conditions, residents can contact VDOT’s 24-hour Customer Service Center online at my.vdot.virginia.gov or by calling 800-367-7623. Additional winter travel resources can be found on VDOT’s weather page.
