In an effort to keep motorists informed, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has released its weekly update on highway construction and maintenance projects in southwestern Virginia. Travelers are advised to exercise caution and remain alert to changes in traffic patterns when passing through work zones.
For real-time traffic information, motorists can contact VDOT’s 511 service or visit their website at https://511.vdot.virginia.gov.
Several ongoing projects on Interstate 81 include widening efforts in Washington County and Bristol, a deceleration lane extension in Wythe County, and roadway improvements between exits 73 and 72. A bridge replacement project is also underway on Interstate 77 in Bland County, along with the construction of a truck climbing lane in Wythe County.
The release notes updates for certain projects such as the temporary closure of the I-81 southbound exit 10 ramp from July 22 to July 23 due to a traffic shift within the work zone. Maintenance activities across Interstates 81 and 77 involve various nighttime operations including paving, bridge repairs, inspections, and traffic sensor installations.
Projects on primary highways and high-traffic secondary roads include bridge constructions and replacements in Buchanan County, Dickenson County, Scott County, Tazewell County, Washington County, Wise County, and Wythe County. Improvements are also being made at several intersections to enhance safety and traffic flow.
Motorists are encouraged to pay attention to signs and message boards for guidance through these areas as construction progresses.
