The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced a suspension of many highway work zones and the lifting of most lane closures on interstates and major roads across Virginia for holiday travel. The pause will begin at noon on Wednesday, November 26, and continue until noon on Monday, December 1.
This measure is intended to facilitate smoother travel during the busy holiday period. However, VDOT advises that scheduled closures may change due to weather or other factors.
A detailed list of full closures includes interstates, ramps, bridges, primary roads, as well as lane closures at key bridge-tunnels and several major bridges in the Hampton Roads area. Specific projects include:
– Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (I-664): Southbound single-lane closure on December 1 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., with alternating single-lane closures in both directions from December 2–4.
– James River Bridge (Route 17): Alternating single-lane closures in both directions from December 2–5 during daytime hours and mobile nighttime closures from December 3–5.
– High Rise Bridge (I-64): Eastbound single-lane closure overnight on December 2.
– For maintenance schedules regarding Elizabeth River Tunnels—including Downtown Tunnel (I-264), Midtown Tunnel (Route 58), and MLK Expressway (Route 164)—travelers are directed to visit the official website.
– HRBT Expansion Project updates can be found on its dedicated project website.
On I-64, various segments will see temporary lane shifts and ramp closures related to widening projects in James City County and ongoing construction of Hampton Roads Express Lanes. Full ramp closures are planned between Mallory Street and LaSalle Avenue exits from December 1–5 during nighttime hours.
Additional intermittent stoppages and long-term traffic pattern changes will occur along I-64 between Tidewater Drive, Patrol Road, Granby Street, Chesapeake Boulevard, Little Creek Road, Bay Avenue exits in Norfolk. Full closure periods for reversible express lanes are also scheduled.
For up-to-date information about these or other necessary lane closures throughout Hampton Roads due to maintenance or construction activities, drivers can access resources at https://511.vdot.virginia.gov/, use the VDOT 511 smartphone app, or dial “511”.
