The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has scheduled a design public hearing to discuss plans for improving pedestrian safety along East Stuart Drive (Route 58) in Galax. The project focuses on a 0.89-mile segment beginning at Route 827 (Hanes Road/Taylorwood Road) and extending to just north of Route 722 (Cranberry Road).

The public hearing will take place on Tuesday, October 7, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Galax City Council Chambers, located at 111 East Grayson Street in Galax. The event will follow an open-house format, allowing attendees to speak directly with VDOT representatives about the proposed improvements.

According to VDOT, the project includes building approximately 5,000 linear feet of new sidewalk along the westbound shoulder of East Stuart Drive between Route 827 and the Walmart entrance. Additional enhancements include installing pedestrian signals and high visibility crosswalks at intersections with Route 827 and Route 722. The plan also calls for closing three commercial property entrances along westbound East Stuart Drive.

“Comments about the project may be submitted at the hearing or until October 17, 2025, by mailing them to Brian Sarver, Project Manager, Virginia Department of Transportation, 731 Harrison Avenue, Salem VA 24153. You may also email your comments to brian.sarver@vdot.virginia.gov. Please reference ‘East Stuart Drive Pedestrian Project’ in the subject heading.”

These changes are intended to improve pedestrian access and safety along a busy section of roadway that serves both local residents and commercial properties.
