The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), in collaboration with Frederick County, is seeking public input for a transportation study on Route 522 (North Frederick Pike). The study will cover the section from Echo Lane to the Winchester city limits and aims to address safety and multimodal access issues. This area includes several accident-prone spots and obstacles for pedestrians accessing nearby activity centers.

Residents and travelers are encouraged to participate in an online survey available from May 5-19, 2025. The feedback collected will assist the study team in identifying current problems along the corridor and formulating recommendations for improvements. These suggestions will be evaluated and presented in the next phase of the study, which will include another opportunity for public comment.

The survey can be accessed at https://publicinput.com/st-25-03 and features a translation tool for other languages. Comments may also be emailed to brad.reed@vdot.virginia.gov or mailed to Brad Reed at VDOT’s Staunton District office.

This initiative is part of the Project Pipeline program, developed by the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB). The program focuses on performance-based planning to find cost-effective solutions for Virginia’s multimodal transportation needs. It is led by Virginia’s Office of Intermodal Planning and Investment (OIPI) alongside VDOT and the Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT).

The study is scheduled for completion in summer 2026 but does not establish construction timelines for any proposed improvements. It will suggest projects, solutions, and investment strategies that could qualify for funding through programs like SMART SCALE, Revenue Sharing, and Virginia Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP), as well as regional and local funding sources.

VDOT’s Staunton District serves several counties including Frederick, Shenandoah, Clarke, Warren, Page, Rockingham, Augusta, Highland, Rockbridge, Alleghany, and Bath. More information about VDOT can be found on their website or through their social media accounts on Facebook, Flickr, YouTube, and X (Twitter).
