The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), working with Albemarle County, the City of Charlottesville, Culpeper County, and the Town of Culpeper, is requesting public input on transportation studies for four corridors in the Piedmont region. The studies are evaluating possible improvements based on previous analysis and feedback collected in June 2025.
Community members can participate by completing short online surveys for each corridor. The surveys will remain open until Friday, November 21. Each survey focuses on a specific corridor:
– U.S. 29 between Route 1106 (Teel Lane) near the Interstate 64 interchange at exit 118 to north of the Fontaine Avenue interchange in Albemarle County.
– U.S. 29 (James Monroe Highway) from the Madison County line to the U.S. 29 Business (Madison Road) interchange in Culpeper County.
– 5th Street between Route 1108 (Pinehurst Court) and Route 1130 (Harris Road) in Albemarle County and the City of Charlottesville.
– Route 694 (Ira Hoffman Lane) from Route 229 (Rixeyville Road) to U.S. 15 Business (Brandy Road) in the Town of Culpeper and Culpeper County.
The surveys include a translation tool for other languages. Feedback can also be sent to Chuck Proctor, planning manager, via email or postal mail.
According to VDOT, “These studies are being conducted as part of the Project Pipeline program, which was created by the Commonwealth Transportation Board. Project Pipeline is a performance-based planning program to identify cost-effective solutions to multimodal transportation needs in Virginia. Project Pipeline is led by Virginia’s Office of Intermodal Planning and Investment, in collaboration with VDOT and the Department of Rail and Public Transportation.”
The information gathered through these surveys will help VDOT and its partners finalize recommendations for each corridor study. The studies are scheduled for completion in summer 2026. They will recommend projects and investment strategies that could be considered for statewide funding programs such as SMART SCALE, Revenue Sharing, and the Virginia Highway Safety Improvement Program, as well as regional and local sources.
No construction dates have been set yet for any potential improvements.
