The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is gathering public feedback for its STARS (Strategically Targeted Affordable Roadway Solutions) study. This study focuses on exploring potential improvements in safety, traffic operations, transit, and bicycle-pedestrian pathways for specific sections of Franconia Road and Commerce Street.
The study covers a half-mile stretch of Franconia Road, between Backlick Road and Commerce Street/Loisdale Road, and another half mile of Commerce Street between Amherst Avenue and Franconia Road. The daily vehicle counts on Franconia Road range from 60,000 to 78,000, with a 40 mph speed limit, while Commerce Street sees 12,000 to 21,000 vehicles daily, with a 35 mph speed limit.
The study assesses current traffic and safety issues, especially those linked to the I-95 interchange along Franconia Road. In June 2023, public input was solicited to help determine corridor priorities, leading to the development of proposed alternatives now under review.
VDOT is inviting community members and commuters to participate in an online survey about these alternatives until April 17. The survey is multilingual, and comments can also be submitted via email or mail to VDOT’s Fairfax office.
The study, scheduled for completion by summer, aims to advise localities on proposed improvements suitable for future funding requests, though it does not establish construction timelines. VDOT reaffirms its commitment to nondiscrimination and equal opportunity across all programs, in line with the Civil Rights Act.
