The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is currently gathering feedback for a transportation study focused on East Main Street in Radford. The study aims to assess potential improvements in roadway and pedestrian safety, multimodal accessibility, and transportation demand management along Route 11 between Lee Highway and Tyler Avenue.
The study will examine traffic operations and safety conditions to consider possible enhancements that could be developed into funding applications. VDOT encourages residents and travelers to participate in an online survey available until June 2. This survey will help identify existing issues and assist the study team in developing recommendations for future improvements, which will be shared during the next phase of the study.
The survey can be accessed at https://publicinput.com/sa-25-03, where a translation tool is available for non-English speakers. Comments may also be sent via email to William.Crawford@vdot.virginia.gov or by mail to William Crawford at VDOT’s Salem office.
This initiative is part of the Project Pipeline program established by the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB). Project Pipeline focuses on identifying cost-effective solutions for Virginia’s multimodal transportation needs through performance-based planning. It is led by Virginia’s Office of Intermodal Planning and Investment (OIPI), with collaboration from VDOT and the Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT).
In partnership with the City of Radford and New River Valley Metropolitan Planning Organization, this study seeks to develop targeted improvements that minimize community impacts while addressing priority needs efficiently. The completion of this study is anticipated in summer 2026; however, it does not establish construction dates for any proposed improvements. The final plan will outline a multimodal investment strategy aimed at securing funding through programs such as SMART SCALE and revenue sharing.
