The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), in collaboration with Frederick County, is requesting public input for a transportation study on Route 522 (North Frederick Pike) from Red Oak Road to Echo Lane, located west of Route 37. The focus of the study is on safety and capacity preservation due to several crash-prone areas along the corridor.

VDOT is encouraging residents and travelers to participate in an online survey available from May 5 to May 19, 2025. “Community input received through this survey will help the study team identify existing issues along the study corridor and develop recommendations for potential improvements that will be evaluated and presented during the next phase of the study, which will include another opportunity for public comment,” stated VDOT.

The survey can be accessed at https://publicinput.com/st-25-04 and includes a translation tool for multiple languages. Comments may also be submitted via email to brad.reed@vdot.virginia.gov or mailed to Brad Reed at VDOT’s Staunton District office.

This initiative is part of Project Pipeline, a program initiated by the Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) aimed at identifying cost-effective solutions for Virginia’s multimodal transportation needs. The project involves collaboration between Virginia’s Office of Intermodal Planning and Investment (OIPI), VDOT, and the Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT).

Completion of this study is anticipated by summer 2026; however, it does not determine construction timelines for any proposed improvements. Recommendations from the study may be considered for funding through programs like SMART SCALE, Revenue Sharing, Virginia Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP), as well as other regional and local funding sources.

For more information about VDOT’s initiatives or updates from their Staunton District office, follow their social media accounts on Facebook and X (Twitter). Additional resources are available on their website at https://www.vdot.virginia.gov/.

The VDOT Staunton District serves several counties including Frederick, Shenandoah, Clarke, Warren, Page, Rockingham, Augusta, Highland, Rockbridge, Alleghany, and Bath.
