The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), in collaboration with Frederick County, is seeking public input on a planning study for Route 7 (Berryville Pike). The study covers the section from the Greenwood Road/First Woods Drive intersection to the eastern boundary of Frederick County.

The purpose of the study is to develop recommendations that address several transportation needs identified in Virginia’s statewide plan. These include improving traffic safety, increasing roadway capacity, supporting Transportation Demand Management, enhancing transit access, and considering upgrades for pedestrian and bicycle facilities. VDOT notes that there are multiple areas along this corridor where crashes occur frequently due to high speeds.

VDOT encourages residents and travelers to participate in an online survey available until November 26, 2025. The survey includes a translation tool for multiple languages and can be accessed at https://publicinput.com/st-25-05alts. Comments may also be submitted by email to brad.reed@vdot.virginia.gov or mailed to Brad Reed at the VDOT Staunton District office.

According to VDOT, “Community input received through this survey will help the study team understand perspectives on proposed solutions and develop final recommendations to address issues along the study corridor.”

This effort is part of Project Pipeline, a performance-based planning program established by the Commonwealth Transportation Board. Project Pipeline aims to identify cost-effective multimodal transportation solutions across Virginia and is managed by Virginia’s Office of Intermodal Planning and Investment in partnership with VDOT and the Department of Rail and Public Transportation.

The study is scheduled for completion in summer 2026. It will recommend projects, solutions, and investment strategies that could be considered for funding through programs such as SMART SCALE, Revenue Sharing, or Virginia Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP), as well as other regional or local sources. However, it does not set construction dates for any improvements.
