The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), in collaboration with Orange County, is requesting public feedback on possible safety and traffic improvements for a 6.8-mile stretch of U.S. 522 (Zachary Taylor Highway). The area under review extends from the Town of Unionville to the Culpeper County line.

The study, part of VDOT’s Strategically Targeted Affordable Roadway Solutions (STARS) program, will focus on current operational and safety conditions along this corridor. Special attention will be given to two intersections: U.S. 522 at Route 617 (Everona Road) and Route 620 (Pine Stake Road), as well as U.S. 522 at Route 611 (Raccoon Ford Road) and River Road.

Potential solutions being considered include adding turn lanes, implementing access management strategies, improving pedestrian accommodations, and making other operational changes aimed at increasing safety and reducing congestion.

Community members can participate in an online survey through September 16 to provide input on the proposed improvements. The survey is accessible via the project page on VDOT’s website.

“Questions about the study should be directed to Justin Cooner, VDOT senior planning specialist, (540) 829-7498, justin.cooner@vdot.virginia.gov.”

Local updates regarding road conditions in VDOT’s Culpeper District are available on their X.com/VaDOTCulp account and the Culpeper District Facebook page.

For real-time traffic information across Virginia, including live camera feeds and travel alerts, residents can visit the 511Virginia website, use the free VDOT 511 mobile app, or call 511 from any phone within the state.
