The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is organizing a public hearing to discuss plans for widening a nine-mile stretch of Interstate 81 between exit 128 in Montgomery County and exit 137 in Roanoke County/Salem. The proposed project aims to add a third lane in both directions, with the goal of increasing capacity and improving safety along this section of the highway.
The hearing is scheduled for Thursday, November 6, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Glenvar Elementary School, located at 4507 Malus Drive in Salem. The event will follow an open-house format, allowing attendees to speak directly with VDOT representatives and ask questions about the project.
Planned improvements include replacing seven pairs of bridges, installing concrete barrier walls in areas where the median is narrow, and constructing sound walls at certain locations. Additionally, ramps will be upgraded at exit 128 (Ironto), exit 132 (Dixie Caverns), and the Ironto Rest Area. The project will also result in changes or breaks in limited access along the corridor.
Members of the public can submit comments on the project during the hearing or by mail until November 16, 2025. Comments should be sent to Craig Moore, Project Manager, at 731 Harrison Avenue, Salem VA 24153. Feedback can also be provided via email to I81IrontotoSalem@vdot.virginia.gov with “I-81 Exits 128 to 137 Widening Public Comment” as the subject line.
Those who require special assistance to attend or participate in the hearing are encouraged to contact Craig Moore at 540-387-5353, toll-free at 800-367-7623, or through TTY/TDD by dialing 711.
