The Virginia Department of Transportation released its Statewide Multiuse Trails Plan on May 1, outlining a framework for developing a connected network of multiuse trails across the state. The announcement coincides with Bike Month, which is held every May to encourage biking and highlight its benefits.

The plan aims to increase trail access for both residents and visitors, serving as a resource for local governments and regional entities in identifying priorities for expanding their trail systems. It seeks to enhance transportation options, recreational opportunities, economic development, health outcomes, and overall standards of living.

“The Statewide Multiuse Trails Plan better equips agencies and partners to create a safe, accessible, and regionally connected network of trails,” Angel Deem, Chief of Policy at the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), said. “The actions laid out in the plan support the commonwealth’s vision of a multimodal trail system that enhances connectivity, promotes equitable access, and improves quality of life for all Virginians.”

Multiuse trails provide dedicated spaces separated from motorized traffic for pedestrians, bicyclists and other non-motorized users. These corridors reduce conflict points between different types of travelers while improving safety. Trails are intended to connect people with where they live, work and play.

Virginia currently has over 1,500 miles of existing multiuse trails documented in the new plan as well as more than 2,900 miles planned. About 36% percent of Virginians now live within half a mile of an existing multiuse trail; if all planned projects are completed this figure could rise to approximately 50%, or about 4.3 million people living within walking distance.

According to the official website, VDOT manages one of the nation’s largest state highway systems while also providing services such as highway maintenance and traffic management through programs like Virginia 511.
