Snow is forecast to move across Virginia overnight Thursday into Friday morning, bringing possible hazardous conditions as temperatures stay near freezing. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has advised drivers to monitor local weather updates and consider altering their travel plans for both the morning and evening commutes on Friday.
Drivers are encouraged to check current road conditions before traveling and be prepared for potentially icy spots, particularly on bridges, ramps, and overpasses where slick surfaces are most likely to develop first.
In preparation for the winter storm, VDOT crews and contractors have applied brine solution to major roads in an effort to prevent snow or ice from bonding with the pavement. As precipitation begins overnight and continues into Friday, VDOT teams will patrol state-maintained roads and treat them with salt and sand. Crews will also address any potential refreezing of wet pavement during the evening as daytime melting may occur. Drivers are reminded to give road crews adequate space while they work.
VDOT has outlined its snow removal priorities: “VDOT prioritizes state-maintained roads that carry the most traffic for snow removal. VDOT works to make interstates and most primary roads (routes numbered 1 to 599) passable first. Crews also focus on major secondary roads (routes numbered 600 and higher) with vital emergency and public facilities or those with high traffic volumes. Low-volume secondary roads and subdivision streets will be treated after higher-priority routes are completed and additional resources are available.”
