Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews and contractors are preparing for expected snowfall on Monday in the Richmond District. According to VDOT, teams are monitoring roadway conditions and will respond with treatments as needed. The anticipated snow may impact both the morning and evening commutes.
“Snow is anticipated to begin early Monday morning and continue throughout the day. Once the snow begins, crews will be focused on plowing and treating state-maintained roadways. Interstates and limited-access roadways, primary and major secondary roads with vital emergency and public facilities, or those with high-traffic volume will be prioritized.”
VDOT stated that plows may be used when snow reaches two inches or more, while a combination of salt and sand could be applied where necessary.
The agency advised motorists to check weather forecasts regularly before traveling during inclement weather. Drivers can access updated information about road conditions through VDOT’s free mobile 511 app, by visiting 511.vdot.virginia.gov, or by calling 511 from any phone in Virginia.
“Those who must travel should use extreme caution, reduce speeds, allow extra time for their commute, and keep safe distances of several car lengths behind snowplows or trucks treating the roadways. Motorists should not pass snowplows.”
Drivers were also reminded that bridges, overpasses, and ramps freeze before other surfaces due to higher elevations.
VDOT’s winter weather page offers additional driving tips for snowy conditions. Questions or reports about hazardous roads can be directed to VDOT’s 24-hour Customer Service Center at my.vdot.virginia.gov or by calling 800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623).
