As the Fourth of July approaches, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is taking steps to facilitate smoother travel for those heading to various celebrations. From noon on Thursday, July 3 until noon on Monday, July 7, VDOT will suspend many highway work zones and lift temporary lane closures on interstates and major roads across Virginia.
Despite these measures, some semi-permanent work zones may still be in place. Travelers are encouraged to check VDOT’s Travel Advisories for current alerts both locally and statewide.
VDOT provides several resources to assist with travel planning. The free mobile app 511 Virginia offers updates on construction, traffic conditions, incidents, and congestion. It also provides access to traffic cameras and information about weather and electric vehicle charging stations. For hands-free traffic alerts while driving, users can call 511 from any phone in Virginia.
The 511 Virginia website features a travel trends map specific to the Fourth of July holiday period. This tool highlights anticipated peak congestion times on state interstates based on historical data. Although it cannot predict exact congestion times for this year, it can help travelers avoid historically slow-moving periods.
For those traveling through Northern Virginia or Hampton Roads, specific routes are recommended due to ongoing construction projects. Traffic heading towards Virginia Beach is advised to use the I-664 Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel as an alternative route during construction at the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel. Similarly, travelers bound for North Carolina’s Outer Banks should consider using I-664 and the MMMBT instead of HRBT.
VDOT also emphasizes safety tips for navigating roadways during this busy holiday period:
– Avoid distractions by putting your phone down while driving.
– If consuming alcohol, ensure a designated driver is available.
– Report impaired drivers by calling 911 when safe.
– Always wear seat belts as protection against impaired or distracted drivers.
– Be cautious around pedestrians and cyclists who may be enjoying outdoor activities.
– Take breaks at one of over 40 VDOT rest stops along highways if embarking on long drives.
– Adhere to the “Move Over” law by shifting lanes away from stopped vehicles with flashing lights when possible or reducing speed if unable to do so.
VDOT encourages everyone celebrating Independence Day to enjoy responsibly while prioritizing safety on the roads.
