The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has issued its weekly update on highway construction and maintenance projects for southwestern Virginia, spanning from June 16 to June 22, 2025. This update is aimed at keeping motorists informed about potential disruptions due to ongoing work.
For real-time traffic updates, travelers are encouraged to use VDOT’s 511 service by calling or visiting their website.
Several projects on Interstate 81 include new paving operations in Smyth County and widening efforts in Washington County. Nighttime lane closures will occur near mile marker 39 in Smyth County from June 18-20, with full-day closures expected between June 22-25. A widening project continues between exits 10 and 7 southbound, and approximately one mile northbound starting at exit 7 in Washington County.
In Wythe County, the deceleration lane at exit 81 is being extended, while an auxiliary lane is being constructed southbound between exits 73 and 72. Bridge replacement work is also ongoing on I-77 in Bland County at exit 62 over Route 606.
On primary highways, Buchanan County sees bridge construction on Route 646 over Left Fork underway since mid-April, with completion expected by October 2025. Meanwhile, a stretch of Route 632 remains closed due to relocation works linked to coal plant expansion.
In Dickenson County, repairs continue on the Route 619 bridge over Pound River. Additionally, a bridge replacement project on Route 63 in Haysi may cause periodic delays as new beams are delivered.
Further south in Scott County, improvements are being made at the intersection of Routes 23/58 in Duffield. Tazewell County has several ongoing projects including a bridge replacement on Route 642 and intersection improvements at Leatherwood Lane and Commerce Drive.
Finally, Wise and Wythe Counties also have active projects aimed at improving safety and connectivity respectively.
“Motorists should pay close attention to signs and message boards,” advises VDOT regarding these numerous construction sites. They stress the importance of alertness to changing traffic patterns across all affected areas.
