Starting Tuesday, May 20, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will introduce a flashing yellow arrow (FYA) traffic signal for northbound left turns from Lankford Highway (Route 13) into the Chesapeake Square Shopping Center in Onley. This change aims to enhance safety and efficiency for drivers making left turns into the shopping center.
The new FYA traffic signal will feature four arrows: a solid red arrow indicating drivers must stop, a steady yellow arrow signaling that the light is about to turn red, a flashing yellow arrow allowing left turns after yielding to oncoming traffic and pedestrians, and a solid green arrow giving drivers the right of way to make the left turn.
These signals are intended to clarify who has the right of way when turning left. The solid green arrow indicates protected turns, while the flashing yellow arrow permits turns after yielding. When the yellow arrow flashes, drivers should wait for a safe opportunity to complete their turn at the intersection.
Motorists heading to the shopping center may experience minor delays on May 19 between 8 a.m. and noon as crews work on installing the equipment.
