The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has mobilized crews in the Salem District to address ongoing winter weather conditions. Teams are working 12-hour shifts to treat roads and will begin plowing when snow accumulation reaches two inches.

Snowfall is expected to continue throughout the day, leading to rapidly changing and worsening travel conditions, particularly during Monday afternoon’s commute. VDOT advises drivers to avoid travel during the storm or until road conditions improve. The department warns that reduced visibility, accumulating snow, and slick roads are likely as the weather system moves through the area.

Travelers seeking real-time updates on road conditions, traffic incidents, and congestion can use VDOT’s 511 mobile app, phone system, or visit the 511 website at https://511.vdot.virginia.gov/. These resources provide current information to help travelers plan their routes.

VDOT also provides local updates for the Salem District through its Facebook Community page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/VDOTSalem and on X at @VaDOTSalem.

The Salem District covers Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, and Roanoke counties.
