Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews are responding to light snow across the Fredericksburg area, Northern Neck, and Middle Peninsula by treating roads for slick spots. The treatment focuses on secondary roads with lighter traffic, as well as bridges, ramps, and overpasses.

Road conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly this morning as pavement temperatures drop below freezing. VDOT advises drivers to adjust their travel plans around winter weather and use caution. “The safest choice is to avoid travel when snow and ice are present on the road,” according to the department. Travelers are encouraged to check current road conditions for their entire route before starting a trip using 511Virginia, since conditions may vary in different regions of Virginia.

Elevated surfaces such as bridges and overpasses may become slippery before main roads due to lower surface temperatures. Drivers should use extra caution in these areas.

VDOT has mobilized crews in 24-hour emergency operations throughout more than 12,000 lane miles of state-maintained roadways in the Fredericksburg District. Crews will spread treatment materials or plow snow as needed. Ahead of the storm, they pretreated Interstate 95 and other primary and high-volume secondary roads.

Road condition reports on 511Virginia classify status as clear, minor (bare pavement except for isolated spots), moderate (snow or ice on major portions), or severe (drifting or partially blocked).

Light snow is forecasted to continue through the day into the evening commute, followed by a wintry mix that could cause isolated icy patches. Any remaining wet pavement is expected to refreeze overnight into Saturday morning as temperatures fall further.

Limited parking is available at two VDOT Park and Ride commuter lots—Route 17 in Stafford County and Route 1 at Commonwealth Drive in Spotsylvania County—because VDOT uses these lots for staging plows working on I-95. The lots remain open but with fewer spaces available; message boards notify users about limited availability.

VDOT encourages travelers to stay informed through resources such as https://511.vdot.virginia.gov, social media updates from VDOT Fredericksburg District, and the VDOT Customer Service Center which operates 24 hours a day for questions or hazard reports. Drivers are also reminded to keep an emergency supply kit in their vehicles at all times.
