Snowfall has ended in the Piedmont region, and crews from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) are now focusing on clearing secondary roads. The Culpeper District reported snowfall amounts ranging from one to three inches.
According to VDOT, road conditions have been improving during the afternoon. By early evening, interstates and primary routes were mostly clear or had only minor issues, with some areas still showing wet pavement. Secondary roads remain in minor to moderate condition as crews continue their work into the evening.
Temperatures are expected to drop below freezing overnight into Saturday morning. This could cause wet roadways to refreeze, especially on bridges and overpasses. Drivers traveling tonight or early Saturday are advised to be ready for slick spots.
VDOT recommends that motorists reduce speed, increase following distance, watch for snowplows and equipment, and give crews enough space to operate safely. Travelers should check 511Virginia for up-to-date road conditions before heading out. Information is available through the 511Virginia website, the VDOT 511 mobile app, or by calling 511 from any phone in Virginia.
VDOT will continue plowing and treating roads throughout the district as needed during the night. Updates specific to conditions in VDOT’s Culpeper District can be found on X.com/VaDOTCulp and the Culpeper District Facebook page.
