State road crews have begun patching work on secondary rural and residential roads in the counties of Albemarle, Greene, and Madison, as part of efforts to improve driving conditions and prevent further degradation. This patching initiative will continue through September 30.
Patching plays a crucial role in maintaining road conditions. Although patching only strengthens damaged areas and improves safety, it is not a complete resurfacing. “Drivers may notice that patched sections are not the same color as the rest of the roadway, and surfaces may not be perfectly smooth or uniform,” according to the announcement.
Many roads receiving patching might be scheduled for paving in 2026. Patching may be done up to a year before paving to prevent worsening conditions, seal cracks and potholes, and reduce water seepage that could weaken the road foundation. This process also stabilizes deteriorated sections to ensure a firmer base for future paving.
Motorists should anticipate minor delays in areas where work is being conducted across the three-county region. Residents are advised to “drive with caution when traveling through patched areas.”
