The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin reconstructive maintenance on Route 208 (Courthouse Road) in Spotsylvania County starting Tuesday, September 2. The work will focus on strengthening the road surface between Lawyers Road and the eastern end of the Courthouse Road bridge over Lake Anna.

According to VDOT, construction crews will move westward from Lawyers Road. During the project, motorists should expect one-way, alternating traffic on weekdays from sunrise to sunset.

The reconstruction involves a full-depth reclamation process covering 3.7 miles of roadway. Crews will remove about four inches of asphalt before stabilizing and compacting the pavement down to a depth of approximately twelve inches, which includes base material. A fog seal—a thin layer of diluted asphalt—will be applied over this base and covered with blotter aggregate to protect the surface and allow vehicles to travel on it at the end of each shift. Multiple layers of asphalt will then be added as the final driving surface.

“The $3.1 million full-depth reclamation work is estimated to take approximately two months to complete. Crews will first remove around 4 inches of asphalt on Courthouse Road. Next, crews stabilize and compact the pavement, down to a depth of around 12 inches, which includes the road base material. Once stabilized, a fog seal is applied over the base material. A fog seal is a thin layer of diluted asphalt that once covered with blotter aggregate, protects the full-depth reclamation surface and allows traffic to drive on it at the end of each shift. Finally, multiple layers of asphalt are applied as the final pavement and new travel surface,” according to VDOT.

The project is expected to conclude by November 2025 if weather conditions permit.

During construction, drivers may experience rougher road conditions in the work zone but will have access at the end of each shift after application of a fog seal.

Message boards are scheduled for placement along Courthouse Road prior to construction in order to notify motorists about upcoming changes.

Allen Myers has been named as contractor for this project.

Based on VDOT’s most recent 2023 traffic count data, Courthouse Road supports an average daily volume of about 8,500 vehicles between Lawyers Road and the Louisa/Spotsylvania County line.
