Fredericksburg – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is set to begin construction next week on a project aimed at replacing the bridge superstructure on Route 207 northbound over the Mattaponi River in Caroline County.
The $9.6 million initiative involves replacing various components of the existing bridge on Route 207, including steel plate girders, concrete deck, railing, bridge approaches, and substructure repairs.
Construction will commence on Monday, July 21. The Route 207 northbound bridge over the Mattaponi River will be closed in late August 2025 and remain inaccessible for approximately nine months. During this period, traffic on Route 207 will be reduced to two lanes. Northbound vehicles will be rerouted to cross the river using the southbound bridge, with one lane open in each direction.
The speed limit within the work zone on Route 207 will temporarily decrease from 60 mph to 45 mph once construction begins. Signs indicating the new speed limit will be installed and covered ahead of time and revealed as work starts.
Provided weather conditions allow, VDOT anticipates reopening the Route 207 northbound bridge to traffic by April 2026.
Route 207 sees an average daily traffic volume of about 12,000 vehicles.
To inform drivers about the upcoming closure and diversion, message boards will be deployed along the route.
