Greg Henion, P.E., has been appointed as the new Fredericksburg District Engineer for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). Henion brings over three decades of experience in transportation and engineering from both public and private sectors. He most recently served as VDOT’s statewide Structure and Bridge Engineer since 2022, overseeing the inspection and integrity of more than 21,000 bridges, culverts, and other structures across Virginia.

In his new role, Henion will be responsible for leading the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operations of more than 12,000 miles of roads spanning 14 counties. The Fredericksburg District covers Caroline, King George, Spotsylvania, Stafford (Fredericksburg area), Northumberland, Richmond, Lancaster, Westmoreland (Northern Neck), Essex, Gloucester, King and Queen, King William, Mathews and Middlesex counties (Middle Peninsula). Additionally, VDOT manages several projects within the City of Fredericksburg. The district serves a population exceeding 550,000 people.

Henion will lead a team of more than 530 VDOT employees in the district. He began work in his new position today.

“Greg’s broad base of experience across VDOT and in the private sector, as well as the leadership roles he has held, have prepared him well to take this next step as the leader of the Fredericksburg District,” said VDOT Chief Deputy Commissioner Cathy McGhee, P.E. “His expertise as a structural engineer will also guide two of the largest projects in the district: the upcoming replacement of the Robert O. Norris Jr., Bridge connecting Lancaster and Middlesex counties; and improvements to the Falmouth Bridge linking the City of Fredericksburg and Stafford County.”

Henion is returning to familiar territory; he joined VDOT in 2011 as Fredericksburg District Construction Engineer before serving as District Maintenance Engineer and later being named statewide Deputy Construction Engineer in 2015. Prior to joining VDOT he spent over fifteen years managing transportation projects in private industry.

“It was an honor to start my VDOT career in Fredericksburg District and I look forward to continuing to serve the travelers of this region,” Henion said.

“Whether you live in the district, operate a business here, stop for a visit or are just passing through you deserve a transportation network that is safe and reliable—and that furthers economic opportunity and our shared quality of life in the Commonwealth. I’m thrilled to be back in Fredericksburg District and build on progress already underway to carry out $1.4 billion in transportation improvements in the district in the next six fiscal years,” Henion said.

Henion holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Bucknell University. He graduated from Virginia Executive Institute and is involved with professional organizations such as AASHTO’s Committee on Bridges & Structures. He is licensed as a professional engineer within Virginia.
