The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced a series of lane closures, detours, and ongoing construction projects across the Fredericksburg District for the week of December 7 to 13, 2025.
In Caroline County, utility work will prompt right lane closures on Route 1 between Route 639 and Route 207 from Monday to Friday. On Tuesday, alternating lane closures are scheduled on Route 207 eastbound between I-95 and Bowling Green for bridge maintenance. Guardrail installation on Route 600 will also result in one-way alternating traffic throughout the week.
Essex County drivers should expect overnight flagging operations on Route 17 southbound between Route 624 and Route 716 due to barrier removal. Additionally, mobile bridge washing operations will take place nightly at several locations, including bridges over Occupacia Creek.
King George County will see single-lane closures for guardrail installation near Little Ferry Road on Route 218 and near Jersey Road on southbound Route 301 during weekdays.
Eltham Bridge in King William County will be reduced to a single lane each night for maintenance work over the Pawmunkey River.
Lancaster County’s Mary Ball Road (Route 3) will have alternating lane closures with flagging between Dennisville Drive and Barbershop Lane from Wednesday through Friday for accessible ramp improvements.
Richmond County motorists traveling eastbound on Route 360 near Newland Road should anticipate weekday single-lane closures for guardrail work. The Downing Bridge connecting Richmond County and Tappahannock will be reduced to one lane overnight Monday through Thursday for bridge maintenance, with automated flagging devices managing traffic flow.
In Spotsylvania County, signal work will close a southbound lane of Route 1 between Market Street and the I-95 off-ramp overnight Monday. Additional fiber installation projects under permit will cause intermittent single-lane and shoulder closures along portions of Routes 1, 3, and Mine Road throughout the week. Water main installation under permit is scheduled overnight Monday through Thursday along Tidewater Trail between Benchmark Road and Pierson Drive.
Other roadwork includes road widening projects with flaggers directing one-way traffic along Harrison Road (Route 620), guardrail installations on Fairview Road (Route 622), as well as ongoing median improvements and fiber installation causing alternating northbound and southbound lane closures along Stafford’s Route 17 corridor.
Major construction continues throughout the district:
– The northbound bridge rehabilitation project on Route 207 over the Mattaponi River in Caroline County has diverted all northbound traffic onto the southbound span until completion expected by April 2026.
– In Fredericksburg City, intersection improvements at key points along Route 1 are underway with completion set for June 2026.
– Cheaneys Bridge Road in Essex County remains closed for a bridge replacement until May 2026; motorists must follow a posted six-mile detour.
– Gloucester County’s $5.1 million safety upgrade at the intersection of Routes 17 and Woods Cross Road is reducing travel lanes until project completion in December next year.
– Several other long-term closure or improvement projects continue across King and Queen, Lancaster, Mathews, Northumberland/Westmoreland counties—most featuring detours or restricted access until late summer or fall of either this year or next.
VDOT maintains Gardy’s Mill Road at Gardy’s Millpond where damage from a dam breach has kept it closed since May; travelers are advised to use Hampton Hall Road as an alternate route. The road runs atop a dam maintained by Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources.
