The Virginia Department of Transportation announced on March 27 that it will provide weekly updates on highway construction and maintenance projects in southwestern Virginia, including the Bristol District, for the period of March 30 to April 5. The department urges motorists to exercise caution and stay alert to changing traffic patterns and possible delays in work zones.

The regular updates are intended to help drivers plan their routes safely and efficiently as multiple roadworks are underway across the region. VDOT encourages travelers to use its Virginia 511 system or visit https://511.vdot.virginia.gov for real-time information about road conditions.

This week’s alert highlights several new ramp closures along Interstate 81 due to bridge repairs at exits 17 and 45, as well as ongoing projects such as deceleration lane extensions, widening efforts between various exits, auxiliary lane construction, truck climbing lanes on Interstate 77, and improvements at major interchanges like Wytheville. Maintenance activities include daytime and nighttime bridge deck repairs, roadway sweeping, brush removal operations, slope work near Bristol’s exit ramp, and the movement of super loads through the area.

Numerous primary highways and secondary roads are also affected by ongoing or upcoming projects. These include bridge replacements on Route 608 in Bland County; culvert replacement on Route 1003 in Buchanan County; roundabout construction at intersections such as Route 83/637 in Dickenson County; safety improvements along Route 19 in Russell County; intersection upgrades in Scott County; detours related to bridge replacements over Cove Creek in Tazewell County; a new connector road project near Progress Park industrial site in Wytheville; line striping activities; waterline relocations causing temporary outages; periodic lane closures for sight distance enhancements; and several other infrastructure works scheduled through late April or beyond.

According to the official website, the purpose of Virginia Department of Transportation centers on building, maintaining and operating Virginia’s roads, bridges and tunnels to support a safe and efficient transportation system. The agency manages one of the nation’s largest state highway systems with tens of thousands of lane-miles across Virginia according to its official website. VDOT also provides services such as highway maintenance, traffic management through systems like Virginia 511 and oversight of land-use permits along state routes according to its official website.
